Thinking about sin as a variety of poverty is helpful. It allows you to see why Jesus has such tender mercy for sinners. Sin is poverty — easily the worst kind of poverty. And we are all sinners.

The worst sinners are the most in need. We may desire to wish evil upon them. But when you realize they are the most in need of our help, it becomes easier to pray for them.

Who prays for the worst sinners? Probably not a lot of people do. But it is what Christ wants us to do.

I hope this helps

Thank you sir, that's a fantastic way of explaining it. God bless you.

So I guess we should see loving and forgiving our enemies as a form of charity, much like helping the poor financially would be?

Yes. I learned about this perspective on mercy via the Divine Mercy Diary of St Faustina. I highly recommend reading about it.
