Notice how this is happening now, after a decade of war invading Ukraine. The latest in a long list of Russian invasions.
Russia doesn't need to hide the realities of the war from its population: Russian culture is all for theft, rape, and murder. It's a popular war. Hell, Russian telegram is full of Russian units bragging about their drone strikes on Ukrainian civilians.
What Russia needs to hide is the fact that they're gradually losing. Just this year Ukraine estimates that military strikes on the Russian economy have already cost them 4% of GDP. Not enough. But combined with all the other costs of war, their economy is in bad shape and there is no path to things getting better without coercing Ukraine into surrender.
_That_ is what Russians care about. And we need to be doing a lot more to destroy Russia's economy and impoverish that psychopathic society. Killing Russians and blowing up their infrastructure means they can't kill you.
Damaging Russia is all nice and well but wouldn't it help to stop the active and relentless replacement with immigrants in your own home country?
Since US infant mortality rate is on the rise, what would be an amount where you would go: "Oh, it's time to fix the dying children before investing in damaging other countries."?
Same goes for deaths of despair and other metrics.
You realize that pretty much all the Ukrainian military people I know are furious at the west for allowing in so many illegals. A surprisingly high % of that problem is created by Russia. Even to the point where Poland has started using live ammo to push back illegals sent to Poland by Russia via Belarus. And it's obviously fuel for far-right parties that are often Russian funded.
Solving that self-inflicted problem would weaken Russia in a lot of ways. And Ukrainians are well aware.
Mor generally, most of the Ukrainian military people I know are fairly right wing and actually liked Trump until he started fucking over Ukraine.
Re: infant mortality, the US has that problem mainly due to the black population. Non-black infant mortality is fine. This isn't something we need to focus on at the expense of security.
It's pretty convenient that Russia is responsible for both, migrant influx through the Polish border and also for the forces (apparently) pushing back against it (right wing parties).
As far as Ukraine goes, they themselves will need a lot of predominantly male immigrants to replace all the male soldiers that "disappeared". At least that is an opinion being openly voiced in Ukrainian elites. This confuses me because the military people that you mentioned are fighting for exactly those elites.

When a society is going through a winter phase, elites tend to look for a scapegoat that they can project all the bad things on. A story as old as civilisation. Whether you are to ignorant to realize this you're simply kayfabbing along because you expect advantages from it is irrelevant.
The bad news for you is that when your elites and more importantly the population realize that they can't damage the exterior adversary they both tend to project the anger inward. Hope that you won't be on the receiving side.
