In the near future it'll all work without invasive surgery. Like how everyone thought the internet was/is a series of tubes (wires) ... when in reality it's available as a radio spectrum.

In extreme cases, I think there'll be surface level attachments that we'll use ... but implants seem like a 50s idea without any of the AI derived advancements were about to get.
