There are similarities between HAM and GMRS. Generally speaking, GMRS and HAM use different frequencies for different purposes. HAM radio operators require licensing whereby you must pass an exam.
GMRS licensing is similar to a fishing license whereby you simply pay the FCC for your license, no exam required, covers you and your immediate family for 10years. You do not need a license to purchase a GMRS radio. You need the license to transmit (talk) on GMRS frequencies.
The perks of GMRS and FRS are many. Easy access to affordable radios that are interoperable. What you can do on GMRS frequencies via repeaters is mind blowing if you consider the possibilities and utility it provides, when doing recreational activities but particularly in emergency situations where conventional communication methods are down.

In the world of HAM radio the activity “is” the use of the radio itself, sometimes referred to as “making contacts” and transmitting data.
Whereas in the world of GMRS and FRS radio we use GMRS and FRS radios while doing the many outdoor recreational activities we engage in. 4x4/overlanding, Camping, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing, hunting, etc…

GMRS seems like a good middle ground. Not sure if my immediate peer group is down to get ham certified.

It’s crazy that you mention this. I’m in the process of studying how this can be done at scale. I am not a HAM radio operator, however I’m in a group that has many experienced HAMs who will assist me getting licensed if I choose as well as give me the insight I need on your (our) question regarding transmitting Bitcoin transactions over radio frequencies.
