I have always found that when learning a language or you dont quite speak a second language fast enough for grouo conversation, trying to make people laugh is better for them to realise they need to slow down than actually asking. For example, when my wife first met my friends in uk, i told her if they speak too fast and dont slow down when asks, to just say "i know nothing, i am monica from barcelona". It worked.

In spain they use guirri as a soft pejorative for foreigner. Jillipollas roughly translates as asshole so i mixed the two words and use to ask how they expected a guirripolla to understand at that speed. It worked but just earned me the nickname El Guirri

Ha ha ha, brilliant😁. I'm going to be doing a tour of South America at some point in the near future so learning Spanish would be a real bonus, not much use in Brazil🤷🏻‍♂️ but pretty helpful everywhere else😬.
