So no wireguard? I install tailscale on truenas scale?
Discussion
That's the neat part.
Tailscale is wireguard under the hood.
So yeah, install it on all the devices you want to connect up. And it's as if you brought them all into the same room for a LAN party.
So on truenas scale and on the phone? Anything needs to be done on the router?
It will work with the local ip of the truenas?
Looks like Tailscale had a guide specifically for that
Tailscale will make it's own IP for the truenas and your phone, and that's the network they'll talk over.
If I want to add another phone into the mix later, is that possible or I have to install it all at the same time?
You can keep adding things to your tailnet anytime. Think of it like connecting a new computer to your router. It'll get an IP and you can connect to it from any other computer that's already on the network.
You pay monthly for this service?
Base is free. I do pay for the mullvad integration. Since you can only have one VPN active at a time, having mullvad built in is the best of both worlds. 5 bucks a month for 5 devices.
Totally missed this note. Saw it on Nostur. Too much notifications.
I guess that makes a lot of sense since only one connection can be active at a time. I’ll start with the free and switch if I use it.
No worries. And yeah, I was using a VPS in Virginia as an exit node for the same effect. But mullvad is much more convenient and faster.
What does the free one use ?
Nothing. It's a classic VPN, just a network among your devices.
All your internet traffic is direct to/from your device.
How long would you say a first install would take? An hour?
I'm guessing you got it working?
