Sure, denying any influence is pretty strange...
But to ask HOW BIG that influence is must be a legitimate way of discussing this topic.
For my taste there are enough uncertainties to question the ability of humans to "stop" global warming.
Nonetheless I support all measures to decentralise power grids and build renewables. Why?
I'd bet that states which have a higher independency from fossil fuel imports are less likely to get involved in armed conflicts.

Which is also actually an interesting thought. Using fossil energy is one of the basic energy consumption possible for humans (after burning wood).
Let's imagine people get crazy and nuke each other till almost extinction and civilization starts again: People will depend on wood and fossils again to rebuild civilization. If we take away all fossils it will get difficult to get from burning wood to build fusion reactor.
So why we don't keep some of the fossils underground where they are as a backup if we can't handle to develop our civ to the next level.
