Very strange that he was acquitted of a lesser crime, but the jury was hung on a more severe crime. That just seems like an irrational jury to me?

The logical explanation and probably what the judge thought was we can’t get him for the severe crime because the penalty is too harsh so. If we give him a softer crime, we still get a guilty verdict. But the jury gave them nothing.
