“necessary”?

When the platform drives what you see and don’t see it’s already doing censorship. For those platforms it’s necessary because that’s how they make money. And since they’re engineered as gate keepers from the ground up, it’s impossible for them to deny government demands to add criteria to their censor algorithms.

When the individual information consumer controls what they read/hear/see, then no, it’s not needed.

Cheers.

If a social media platform is controlled by a single company, there will be censorship for sure. On the other hand, if a platform is decentralised and open-sourced, there will be much less censorship.

What is good about Nostr is that users can control what they read, hear and see like you said. Truly splendid.
