People forget, or are too young to know, that Twitter became relevant because it worked over SMS. During the Green Revolution in Iran true accounts of the protests and government crackdown got out on Twitter when thengovermentshut down all media and communication including the Internet and voice services. The citizen journalist with live coverage was born. Citizen coverage from Iran got on live world coverage and that isnwhat got all the news organizations on board. The masses followed.

Point is, we simply don't need Twitter anymore, but people think we do.
