Why am I being forced to conduct transactions in pesos or USD and not gold/silver coins like in the good ol' days?

Because gold failed as a currency.

You can argue that it's doing fine in other aspects but it definitely doesn't have the attributes to be used as currency, if it did, we would be using it instead of paper/digits backed by nothing.

And regarding gold-backed currency issuers, I'll believe in them when I see one last more than 15 years.

For some reason they aren't working...

(I haven't been able to find any recent info about e-dinar or gbullion, and both of their official websites are down/expired, I'm guessing they are dead as well)
