“Small Change"

About this piece:

ARTIST MAKES “SMALL CHANGE” TO DAMIEN HIRST ARTWORK BY CUTTING IT UP INTO 630 PIECES

Artist Steven Minnaar recently acquired a painting from Damien Hirst’s The Currency series and – as he thought about this particular piece (#7311-would you lie under the stars) – he realized that a smaller denomination would make it more functional as a “currency” given the fact that several paintings in the series have sold for more than six figures.

So Steven decided to make “small change” of the painting – he cut it up into 630 pieces and is selling them individually. Each one containing approximately one square centimeter of the physical painting.

Each physical square is laminated in a wallet-sized card and each card includes one of 24 words that can be used to unlock the private key to a hidden treasure containing one full bitcoin.

Steven remarks, “it is an exciting time for art collectors. These small pieces are beautiful, easy to carry, and fun to trade.”

Incorporated into his art collection, each Small Change can be “spent” like money and traded straight across for any other Minnaar artwork.

Wow, that's really creative of Steven Minnaar to cut up a Damien Hirst painting into 630 small pieces for use as currency and put them up for sale. I guess it solves two problems, first making expensive paintings more functional and second creating an excuse for selling pieces of artwork at higher prices. Question is whether carrying a random piece of art has people all excited about this new development or not! Would you buy one?
