I recommended Nostr & Damus, astral.ninja to my friends (all BTC holdrs), signed them up, had a great time, posted a photo of myself & was met with death & rape threats. Not a good look.

I know and hate that this happened, but the support you have behind you definitely outweighs the negativity. Nostr is still new, and we are bound to get some bad apples, but it will all get hashed out.

I’m gutted to see this, and feel sick for you, and yes - what’s our response? This is something we’re gonna have to deal with more and more, so what should be the nostr response and approach? I don’t know how the backends work on relays, but should relay operators be responsible for maintaining the governance integrity of their relay?

I’m not really sure what can be done technically as I’m not a developer.
This is likely only the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come. Assholes, idiots, state actors, competitors, they are all going to say things that will make nostr look like 4chan. I can almost guarantee it.
If anyone has any ideas, cool.
I wouldn’t say no one cares, I think we all do. But things don’t magically fix them selves, someone has to actually develop a solution.
It's pretty clear that we need muting (words and people), blocking and reporting (NIP 56). I'd also like to see a more fun "transform" feature that turns insults into compliments (someone writes "you're stupid", I see "you're the best"). Twitter is only high-signal for me because I have hundreds of people muted/blocked, and some key words on my mute list.
We have people muting now but could definitely use word muting. Would love to see this as a feature!
Friends don't let friends use astral.ninja unless they want relay lists, follow lists, etc wiped constantly. Avoid at all costs.

What browser based NOSTR client do you recommend? (I am not a fan of astral.ninja either, FWIW.)

I like nostrgram on desktop, lots of viewing tweeks, clean, and changes get made on the daily with an extremely active dev. snort and iris are both strong contenders, I should re-visit coracle...

I am afraid Nostr is just a raw scope into human nature, and often its not great what we see there.
This is of course sad. But any moderation is censorship. And freedom of speech is one of the highest goals. The reason is simple, everyone has their own perception of the world and values. For example, Elon Musk is sure that he brings the light of the censorship that is now on Twitter. But this is only his truth, which affects everyone by censorship. Therefore, everyone should speak without any censorship. And who doesn't like what can block it on their own. Otherwise it will turn into the same twitter.
Try iris.to. its a bit "safer" experience. It filters out every message that no one in your social network has interacted with. Its not a silver bullet but it does the job fairly good. I rarely experience spam or trolls. When i do they get the block. Also I am never browsing global.
Also you can go with paid only relays. That will filter out another bunch.
As a developer, one solution I can recommend is clients allowing users to bring in their own AI model for content filtering.
