The whole thing with the Canonical employee defacing the XLibre github page coming out to be a registered sex offender has me thinking... So, he was in prison for a number of years, and some time later landed a job at Canonical.
Lunduke seems to opine that Canonical should have never hired him, and should now immediately fire him. But what do you do with someone like that, if people aren't supposed to give him a job after coming out of prison? It's not like he had a position giving him access to children or otherwise vulnerable people. It's an IT job.
Do you just give him the death penalty? He was apparently a minor when he committed the crimes, though they were absolutely horrendous and repeated countless times. Not sure the death penalty would have been acceptable here / if it's ever acceptable for people who committed crimes as minors.
Should he have stayed in prison for the rest of his life? Again, given that he was a minor when he committed the crimes, I'm not sure how sensible this is.
Make him live on the streets shitting in boxes under a bridge and begging for or shoplifting food? Of course not; that's not good for society and also an unusually cruel punishment.
Let him live on government benefits forever? Why do that if he can work; it would be almost like rewarding him.
Only ever give him shitty minimum wage jobs where he doesn't interact with people? This would *maybe* sorta kinda make sense but... It's a really weird life-long punishment, isn't it? There's a chance that this sort of treatment would just make someone double down on criminal attitude, making them give up on society and become a complete delinquent, potentially even a more dangerous person over time.
What do you think should happen to someone who committed horrible crimes against children when he was a teenager?
