Purchasing an account allows you to manage your uploads, and gives you some higher upload limits, that is all. It's just a way to support a crew that worked hard to make something.
I also signed up today, although it will make very little difference in my flow on Nostr, since I run my own service and also have a private bucket somewhere.
Don't let it all dissuade you! Post your content and people will enjoy it! There is nothing obligatory to content on Nostr that isn't available for free. Some of us have a bit extra, and we want it to go towards both the work and expenses of builders - of whom I can name many - who have worked for nothing but good will and a desire to see this succeed.

it's the principle behind it that's holding nostr back....
We need one nostr client mobile app that DOES IT ALL..... not 80 tabs open, then comes along PWA to organize the 80 tabs to use nostr fully....

Nostr needs the devs "centralized" and working together on ONE MOBILE APP to WIN in TODAYS world...
Satoshi wasn't one, he was many.

If you are using Android you should give NostrNet.work a try, it work for me. One PWA to manage all your PWAs & webapps. Btw turn it into a pwa for better experience. Btw It's still under development.

Yes, it is technically challenging to incorporate all services into a single app without compromising the user experience, such as social media, marketplace, music service, and more.
There is also a philosophical concern that many people, including myself, are worried about, which is the risk of centralization if we rely solely on one flagship app.
My proposed solution is quite different. I believe that clients should not build all the features themselves. Instead, they should provide users with the ability to add these microservices web app as extensions to their existing client.
So you can have more integrated experience without compromising the decentralization.

But then arnt we all centralized around bitcoin "fixing the money"?
Isn't that what had to happen for bitcoin to happen for us today?

Yeah, that is one of the reasons for PWA, & it also offers proper cache features for a better app-like experience.
Regarding Nostr, nostr protocol is indeed a flagship idea like Bitcoin blockchain, but the clients are more like Bitcoin wallets. Imagine having just one wallet that everyone uses, and it being custodial.
I mean, clients can essentially do anything, barring banning any piece of content, regardless of how many relays you are connected to. That's why people are very careful.
Nostr isn't an app. It's a protocol that you can build things on top of, apps, blogs, communities, whatever you want. What you describe is the opposite of the entire point of Nostr.
I also have a paid account. I don't really need it, but I like to support the people who are creating Nostr tools. nostr.build hosts images for free for anyone using Nostr, the payment just gets you some extra functions.
