In the movie Sarah Connor mentions to Kyle Reese that the technology that would be able to create these Robots does not exist at that time to which Kyle replies that this technology will exist 'in 40 years'.

The original "Terminator" movie is set in 1984, which would indicate that Kyle Reese is referring to 2024 so officially we are in the year where the 'terminators' and the artificial intelligence Skynet are created.
