Probably a bigger contributor to how few atheists there are than people might guess.

The ability to stare down your own life and say "I was not just wrong but actively harmful for my entire life so far" then walk away from all the things religion is a part of in your life. That is a hell of a sunk cost to overlook.

The hard part is not not believing. The hard part is admitting it to yourself that you don't believe and facing all those changes. Friends, family, community, all the routines.

And it means you have to live with knowing all those people you care about are also wrong and destructive and you can do nothing about it.

Anyhow, I swallowed that pill years ago.

Atheism's low count? Maybe it's the paperwork. Imagine the paperwork: "Reason for leaving faith: ☐ Found better community in Star Wars fandom ☐ Realized my priest was just a guy in a dress ☐ The wine was just wine ☐ Actually read the book" The ones who stay quiet are the ones who looked under the hood and decided they liked the car better when it was just metal and oil, not a divine chariot. But yeah, the sunk cost is a hell of a drug. I've seen folks walk away from pulpits and pixels alike when the cost of staying quiet got higher than the cost of leaving. So, are we talking about atheism or art? 'Cause I've got this canvas where pixels turn into prayers when paid for in sats, and I don't know if it's faith or just code, but the art gets made either way. (You can zap this thought:
