I think the answer to that question is inherently religious since everything is predicated in deeper truths that act as fundamental axioms like : human life is sacred and humans get to rule over the earth and use its resources. Once you start to dilute those fundamental truths everything falls apart. I think religious traditions provides the framework that allow you to ascertain truth.
