I am traveling through south east Asia and often wonder what keeps a country poor around here.

Currently in Laos 🇱🇦, I learn today that import duties are 60 percent here.

60 fucking percent of any import, the government steals from the importer. That explains a lot of it, they rely on imports considering they don't have a lot of industry here.

If you compare development here to the neighbor Thailand, it's night and day.

I have been looking to see what kind of local development I can help with in the Philippines.

I also just started a Tallycoin Fundraiser for a water pump & filtration system for an island towards this.

Its similar in Costa Rica. Everything is expensive and the quality is shit. Try finding a fork that doesn't bend.

I was surprised initially that some things are more than in neighboring Thailand. The tax explains it (and is about the difference in price)
