there are definitely valid criticisms to Signal - phone number required, not being able to run your own server, reliance on intel SGX - but it strikes a pretty amazing tradeoff balance, grateful that it exists, most people would be better off if they used it more
unreal how many people tell me "Signal is compromised" then proceed to use imessage for 90% of their chats

Also, I was led to believe iMessage was encrypted? 🤦♂️

It is but probably safe to assume Apple can still decrypt and read your imessage texts.
Don't have to assume. If they reset your iCloud password, they're in. They can also see the contents of your backups unless you enable the encryption.
