The Towering Tribute of Rome: The Column of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina

Standing majestically in Rome's Piazza Colonna, the Column of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina was erected around 180 CE, likely commissioned by Emperor Commodus in tribute to his father, Marcus Aurelius, and mother, Faustina. Modeled after the earlier Trajan’s Column of 113 CE, this monumental structure commemorates the military successes of Marcus Aurelius against the Quadi along the Danube River between 172 and 175 CE.

Rising 39 meters above ground, with an additional 7 meters of its base extending underground, the column once reached an impressive height of approximately 51.95 meters, topped by a statue—presumably of Marcus Aurelius himself.

The column’s interior is hollow, featuring a spiraling staircase that, in ancient times, led to a panoramic viewing platform at its peak, though access is now restricted to the public. Historians believe that a temple dedicated to the deified emperor and empress may have once stood nearby, completing the tribute to Rome’s esteemed rulers.
