Current copyright law does protect small writers and songwriters, clearly, and thank God that protection is never going to change, regardless of how loud the infinitesimally small number of people on your side of the argument complain about that protection. 🙏

Regarding the Intellectual Property Rights of writers and producers of books, music and movies:

Critics who are 1. against these folks having Intellectual Property Rights, and 2. also claim to broadly believe in and support the idea of Proof of Work in all/most areas of life -- these critics have cognitive dissonance and are dishonest.

Stealing the fruits of someone's hard work is BS.

So what would be the effect on open source software if copyright laws were abolished?

Copying software and turning it closed source would cease to be a problem if there was no way to enforce copyright. Might not be a big deal, but open source licences try to prevent that kind of behaviour because it would fragment development.
