AFIK the expensive thing to scale in websockets is having the connection open. Will we see relays that require users to do some authentication to even open the connection?

Agreed, I think that we will see paid relays requiring auth to open a connection as allowing read only connections still potentially puts a fair bit of load on the servers with DB queries etc. I also think that paid relays will need to move to a recurring subscription model longer term as the current one off payments are not going to cover costs as we scale up.
There's a lot of rate limiting done already. For #[2] I need to listen for dms and it's always getting booted and needs to reconnect.
