When will we get a NIP that allows #nostr accounts to be private, with notes hidden from the public ?

Can't even get decent relays and fight spam well yet

Maybe someday they will figure out how to do it đ
How would you imagine that would work under the hood? Encrypt with a key that is shared with all your followers (or a circle of friends)?
Yes, kinda like a private chat room. But not sure how the key distribution to the circle of friends would work and another one idea might be just via private relay that only by my approval notes can be seen by others. Idk Iâm dumb
A private relay would get you part way there. The big problems I see with it are:
- People who do have access could still easily "broadcast" or boost" your notes and they could be published to other relays (perhaps b/c they didn't realize it was intended to be private)
- You'd need a different relay for each group. So one for your snowboarding friends, one for your gun friends, one for cross fit, another for cross stitch, and so on
AFAIK there's no way to express what you'd like people to do with your posts. Being able to include things like "no sharing" seems like a good one. There's no guarantee that people and clients would respect that, but it'd be better to at least have the freedom to express what you want.
Everything can be limited and set up on the relay. But the current relay implementations arenât good. At least by default there could be some restrictions for the operators not to log IPs
Sure, for limiting the initial distribution, but once a client has a note, they can do whatever they want with it. Including boosting it to all the relays they use.
If client like Damus has anonymous, private, public, features for zaps why wouldnât client have the same features for notes? âbroadcast only to your followersâ option for example
There needs to be something in the protocol that allows them to specify this. I believe the zap privacy is just about whether the client posts a public note on Nostr that says you zapped their note, or posts a DM, or posts nothing at all. And I'm not sure how that last option differs from anonymous.
That's not just a Damus thing, either. It's in Amethyst too, and I suspect is a defined standard somewhere.
A NIP saying note type XYZ is for notes that can't be shared (boosted, broadcast, etc.) but are otherwise to be treated like type 1 notes.
Sure, there should be a NIP for this, but itâs disappointing that no one is bringing these ideas forward. Devs have stopped listening to users here!
Achieving the goal of making notes visible only to a specific circle of friends and preventing resharing outside this group.
So probably it would look like this:
- encrypt each note with a symmetric key that you share only with your circle.
- Encrypt each note with individual keys for each friend, which is impractical for groups, or note's decryption key is only valid for one read or for a very short time
This could also address the question of data ownership on nostr. While people might still take screenshots of notes and share them, the information wouldnât be universally broadcasted or permanently stored in every possible relay.
