Due to Greenland's proximity to North America, it has been part of an Arctic strategy well before WW2 (see Monroe doctrine).
With geo political moves being made by China and Russia, the focus on Arctic strategies has put Greenland back in the spotlight.
The US has a large amount of control of much of Greenland already by agreement with Denmark.
Thule AFB was built in 1953 there.
It has offered to purchase Greenland from Denmark a number of times. (Including WW1 but the US purchased the Danish West Indies, now the Virgin Islands, to protect the Panama Canal instead).
