The ledger exists (in computer memory) but the things tracked by the ledger do not exist.

If I tracked the bitcoins on paper the ledger would be just as real as when it was in computer memory and the things tracked just as imaginary.

You call the items tracked "Bitcoin", but you could call them unicorns or mithrils or jabberwockies with just as much validity.
