I think he overstates the role of "mass man" in the manufacture of nostalgia though. There are many very good reasons why people today might think of the past as a better time and progressive rock will always be cool.

That’s true & yes for sure. Also when he was writing some things were worse than even now, e.g. air pollution in North American cities and London had the Great Smog of 1952 of which I just saw this photo for the first time. Revivals though, wow, I haven’t thought of those in a long time. The internet must have totally displaced them?

Revivalism or retro-culture seemed to be intensifying before the current era of insane politics wiped everything else away.
