Running a few lines messy micropython code with hard-coded wifi credentials and without exception handling.

i try to improve the code and then will put it on github.

I have a spare Pi zero laying around. Will it be useable with that? Or Pico only?

With the Pico it is "plug and play" with the Zero you will have to make at least a few adjustments i think.
