Since we're talking about the serialization format here, I don't think it's too important to find something super efficient right now. The serialization is quite literally "last-mile", it's at the very surface of the protocol and can be changed very easily, compared to the API. We're working on a big refactoring project of the protocol right now, the serialization format will be something to consider afterwards.
Well, just make sure it happens before things get big enough that it can't...
