Is that possible on a rpi4? I thought only the newly lauched 5 could do that

It supports USB boot. My pi4 is running off a USB drive. It's a lot quicker

Some yes but I recommend you buy a m2 ssd and a m2 USB enclosure. That way you know the quality. There are some prepackaged ssds you can buy in USB cases too. I'll post a pic of mine in a second

Here is three different SSDs my raspberry PIs boot off of. Two nvme enclosures and a regular sata ssd to USB 3 connector.

The smallest nvme enclosure is the neatest but runs hot. I recommend the silver enclosure.
