Kill comes from the senses "hit, strike, throw (at), beat, cut, knock down" while cull's origins are more of the sense "gather, pick, get rid of". ----

I have never like the world cull, it always seemed too withdrawm to me. It has seemed to me to have a non-responsible/less truthfull/desensitising vibe to it.
