In this video, James Lopp talks about the proof-of-work system hashcash for preventing spam “… the learning lesson you can take from email is that it is possible for a protocol to work for decades but then it encountered stressors which was mass adoption by tens of millions of people…And it didn’t have to be that way, now there was this guy in 1997 who proposed something called hashcash…Adam Back realized that the problem of email spam… could be solved by economics.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashcash Mark 31:31 of the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEm3NKNAATA&t=1889s

Just listened to this the other day! Really helpful and relevant.

A simple way to integrate it could be:

- replies from accounts you directly follow -> always show

- replies from others -> configurable PoW requirement

More advanced things (WoT, 2nd / 3rd degree follows, etc) need extra queries or special logic on the relay.

"configurable PoW requirement" = a config in the web client: only show notes from strangers with at least X bits of PoW

Agreed, this wouldn't be a hard place to start

good idea
