There might be a bit too much oxygen in your burn.
Its hard to see in the pic, but there is a steep walled trench right where the fire is. Some of the logs span the gap making it look like it is on flat ground.
I am going to do a couple burns then fill the area with wood chips and direct roof runoff to it. This is why some of it is dug shallow.
I filled seven 5 gallon buckets with charcoal. I have about that much wood to burn again, then this space will get filled with wood chips and plants for roof runoff.
