The way I understood it is that it provides enough cues for the private key to turn brute forcing it from impossible (millions of years) to possible (years) with large DM datasets and large computing power.

But I am not deep into this to know if that is true or not.

Is this similar to avoiding reusing bitcoin addresses?

No, reusing Bitcoin addresses cannot reveal your private key or other secrets that might have been used in the protocol. It's just less private.

With a reused nonce it can, not so much of an issue now that it's deterministicly generated though.
