The Banking Model: Freire’s Critique of Passive Learning

Paulo Freire’s “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” provides a foundational critique of traditional education systems, which he describes as the “banking model.” In this model, students are seen as passive receptacles into which teachers deposit knowledge. This unidirectional flow of information stifles critical thinking and reduces learners to mere objects of education rather than active participants in the creation of knowledge.
