You are right to point out there is a lot of passion. This is required, and insufficient.

Open source does not mean free of charge.

Nostr is fortunate to have generous donors for the near term.

As foss users we can do our best to prompt devs to add easy subscription, purchase options, and reward monetarily whom we receive value from.

I agree. I zap some of them daily multiple times.

And No, Open Source doesn't mean free of charge, however most open source software are free of charge if im not mistaken.

The best the nostr community can do right now is focus on making it easier to run a public or private relay.

Today, anyone can install bitcoin core by copy and pasting a one line CLI command or installing something like Start9 linux distro from a USB stick. All free of charge, to help contribute to the network.

I would like to see the same removal of barriers for running nostr relays. (i am starting to lose understanding of the importance of running a private relay which is easy to install).

I am glad apps like Amethyst offer open source downloads from Fdroid. Being open source is the most important part here, if something is abandoned due to lack of cash, it can be forked by other devs which is inevitable. That is my hope and belief.
