Framed #707 (nope. I watched a Netflix documentary about the RaΓ«lian movement. I'm inclined towards people being able to believe whatever they want even if it's bonkers*, provided it's not anti-social or illegal. There does seem to be a tendency to want something beyond what we see and what we perceived as limitations within our own lives. Combine that with a community and there's a lot of dangers, not last the loss of individual identity outside of whatever institution or structure a person identifies with. That's not unique to any religion of institutions. Not necessarily bad in terms of a sense of purpose but precarious if there's no purpose without it. If, as a thought experiment, a person imagines the distance between technology now and technology during the 1940s that's a pretty big gap. If a person imagines an encounter with beings with gap beyond that the potential revelations would be quite far beyond 1970s and 1990s sci-fi tropes. Things we haven't thought about rather than things we have and fairly easy to verify - advanced beings always provide batteries and see the advantages of comprehensive manuals/documentation. Unless we stole it, in which case we'd inch around in the dark using the primitive scientific tools we have available, lighting things up bit by bit, and I'm not sure we should wholly trust theives. We're not special because we're all special.)
