-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-

Kelp vs seaweed vs algae

- what's the difference?!

Well, we're here to "kelp"

All kelps are seaweeds, but not all seaweeds are kelp. Both are types of algae, which, despite common belief, are not plants!

"Seaweed" is a fairly broad term that encompasses red algae, green algae, and brown algae. Seaweed species can vary drastically in size, ranging from teeny tiny to meters long...

Kelp is a particular subgroup of large brown algae, primarily belonging to the order Laminariales. In comparison to other "seaweeds," kelp is typically larger and more structurally defined, having a holdfast, stipe (stem), and blades (leaves). Kelp is also well-known for growing in dense forests and is generally found in colder waters rich in nutrients ๐ŸŒฟ
