I have been watching the conversation around this topic from the sidelines but I think something is being missed as highlighted here by Jack two months ago :)

Reposts AND/OR zaps are what can replace likes.

If you can’t zap for whatever reason you can still repost, quote (or comment)

That little extra effort makes it more valuable. For me a “like” has always felt so lightweight that they are almost meaningless. 🤔

A like is not meaningless although it’s free. Likes can be used to show acknowledgment of having read the note, as a nod / agreement, and as a show of support for what was said.

We don’t always need to respond to everything. Real life conversations have ahums and “yeah” and “totally” or actual head nods and online likes sometimes take place of that.

Besides, it feels inappropriate to throw money at a note in some scenarios where a slightly supportive signal would be more meaningful.

That’s a convincing argument for. I’ve never thought of it as a conversational “filler” and can see that they could fulfill that function for sure

Just liked this note as a nod 😉

Take out reposts and quotes if we really want to take it there
