When addition and subtraction made since

The teacher gave everyone like 5 popsicle sticks

She said ok so u have 5 sticks

Now minus 2

Take 2 away

And throw them in the trash

So I did

And she was like ok now how many do u have left

Everyone had 3 left

So 5-2=3

Before the popsicle sticks it did not make any since to me
