The record for the longest individual filibuster speech in the United States Congress is held by Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. On August 28-29, 1957, Thurmond spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes in an attempt to delay the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. This remains the longest single-person filibuster in U.S. Senate history as of April 1, 2025.
