Not really, you can even build your own with a freeNAS or any other OS.

But for home users that do not want to complicate with installing/configuring NAS OS, a Qnap or Synology are straight away configured and you can use it as a personal "cloud" wherever you are, even as a private youtube if you like.

I've running several NAS in the last 15 years and never have the need to buy any "cloud service", always using my private NAS on private domains (out of others eyes) and barely sharing files only with few well known users if were needed.

Plenty of tutorials about NAS on internet of any flavor.

I researched Synology and it meets what I want to achieve minus Open Source (which would be nice) + 3,2,1 but no cloud.

I looked at TrueNas but didn’t see an easy way to have a replicated offsite. Thanks for sharing. I need to look at FreeNas.

I guess FreeNas is sort of TrueNas.

Depends what do you want to do.

For example you can even use https://www.openmediavault.org/

But for sharing with your family some files and keep your stuff accessible wherever you want, I found Qnap of Synology well enough linux based systems with plenty of ready to use apps.

Thank you!!!
