For small amounts a software wallet app on your phone is fine. For more significant amounts you’d want a dedicated hardware wallet like Coldcard or Blockstream Jade. Bluewallet and Green wallet are good self-custody wallet apps for on chain bitcoin. Breez and Phoenix are good self-custody lightning wallets. Some people run a dedicated always-on Lightning node, which allows you the most flexibility but also is the more complex.
