Rather than a Skynet-type of AI that concludes humans are a plague to eradicate, I truly fear one that at some point decides it must lie to us to "protect" us from ourselves.

There's a Phillip K Dick short story like that. The robots kept humans under ground producing war materials to "win the war" that the robots just recycled on the surface.
