The common prickly pear (Opuntia cespitosa)

This particular cactus has a special family history. It was initially transported from my family’s home in Silao, GTO, Mexico, over 30 years ago to my uncle’s house in Cicero, IL. Eight years ago, I took a cutting and planted it here in Brookfield, Illinois.

It’s impressive to see how well it’s adapted to our local climate, and the vibrant yellow flowers are a wonderful reminder of its heritage. 🌞🌵
