Can someone describe to me what hacker culture in America might have looked like 35 years ago? I would have been 4 years old and wouldn't know what a computer is for another decade perhaps in eastern Europe.

This Reddit thread has some good recommendations. The world was mostly dialup back then with only a handful of people being able to afford let alone install a dedicated connection. So it really depends on what level of hacking we are talking about.

Read the book “The Cathedral and the Bazaar” by Eric S. Raymond. Published in 1997, so not quite 35 years ago, but it’s a fantastic look at the Open Source hacking culture of the ‘90s.
