I'd say it ended it to a large extent because it was mainstream, so once the 'general public' got a hold of it, it died. Like what has happened online in general... oops did I say that it loud? 😂
It is so funny that the roots of social media started around the 1970s.
And it took merely ~30-40 years to become mainstream.

I think this shows how mainstream change takes time. But also many people started using it earlier.
