They were OK until Rome conquered Jerusalem. Jewish people revolted against Roman religious laws, Romans fought back and many Jewish people escaped, others accepted.
After Ottoman conquest of Middle East, they had tax exemptions for Muslim people at Palestine. So, Jewish had two options, accept Muslim or pay extra fees. Some converted, others moved to Europe to avoid the "religious tax".
After centuries of Ottoman rule, Islamic Palestine people was a majority in contrast of Jewish Palestine people. Then nationalism started to raise, and Zionism got strength, specially at Germany to claim the state of Israel.
After WW1 (Fall of Ottoman Empire), Zionists and Nazis made the Haavara Agreement to move Jewish people from Europe to British Palestine, and hundred of thousands moved there.
After WW2, British did partition... etc etc
