I just ignore it if we/the user doesn't want to auth in that relay.
ignore it as you stop sending REQ/EVENTs to it but don't disconnect?
or ignore the AUTH and continue talking to it?

no, I keep sending filters because some (many?) relays return the public, non-authed part of the relay just fine.
