Well not exactly. Matrix is similar to xmpp. But matrix/element are one protocol, and xmpp is a different one.

I like xmpp because you could create an xmpp account for your mom and all she has to do is click a link to a website and then download a client app.

Matrix MAY be as simple, but ive never had that kind of ease of use with it
